Level 2

After completing level one, students will be ready to begin level two. This is an advanced readiness level. Students will study the letters of the alphabet again in the same order. This time they will work to master the following skills. The teacher always works with the students to provide instructions and support as they complete the pages together.

  • Students will complete an oral blending/segmenting page, guided by the teacher. In the oral blending exercises, they will listen to the teacher pronounce individual letter sounds, put the sounds together mentally, and find the related picture. In the segmenting exercises, they will see a picture and pronounce the individual sound for that picture, moving a small token on a grid as they pronounce each sound.
  • Students will trace geometric shapes as handwriting warm-up activities to prepare students to write new letters.
  • Students will learn to write the lowercase and capital letters on lined pages.
  • Students will look at pictures and write a letter to show either the beginning or ending sound for that word.
  • Students will match rhyming pictures.
  • Students will practice pronouncing two-letter combinations, for example ab, ac, ad, af, ag, and ba, ca, da, fa, ga, always using the short vowel sound for the vowel.

You can see and download the two Exploring Sounds In Words books below. It is important to open the files in the two-page view with the cover displaying as a separate page so that all the pages will align correctly.
